Switching Observation of Magnetite by Magnetoelectric Effect

The magnetoelectric effect of magnetite was measured over the temperature range from 4.2 K to 50 K, and an anomaly was found at about 45 K in magnetically induced electric polarization along the triclinic b axis, or P b , when the magnetization rotated in the ac plane. On the contrary, when the magn...

Summary:The magnetoelectric effect of magnetite was measured over the temperature range from 4.2 K to 50 K, and an anomaly was found at about 45 K in magnetically induced electric polarization along the triclinic b axis, or P b , when the magnetization rotated in the ac plane. On the contrary, when the magnetization rotated in the bc plane, no anomaly was observed at that temperature. This anomalous behavior of the magnetoelectric effect is considered to be due to the switching of the a to b axis in magnetite by the external magnetic field. This is the first observation on a-b switching of magnetite by means of the magnetoelectric effect.
