Summary: | Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is considered to be of significant importance in addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In advancing Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13), CCUS plays an increasingly important role. However, the rapid evolution of CCUS research presents challenges in identifying emerging topics and future directions, which are vital for accelerating climate action. This study introduces a systematic approach based on the Subject-Action-Object (SAO) structure and semantic similarity analysis to identify emerging topics in CCUS. Through the analysis of 1820 CCUS-related papers published between 2014 and 2023 in the Web of Science (WoS) database, we identified emerging topics in CCUS, including artificial intelligence (AI) applications, cost optimization, international collaboration and social acceptance, as well as the application of nanotechnology. We analyzed the role of these emerging topics in supporting SDG 13, providing insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders in advancing low-carbon technologies.
•Systematic analysis of emerging trends in CCUS research from 2014 to 2023.•Focus on technological advancements, policy frameworks, and economic viability in CCUS.•Novel approach combining SAO structure extraction and semantic similarity analysis.•Identifies key research directions supporting SDG 13 and global climate goals.•Provides strategic insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders. |
