Summary:A methodology and algorithms for the systematic research of the effect of simplifications on the mathematical modelling for the optimal annual operation planning of hydrothermal systems are discussed. The effect of simplifications in the case of hydro-system aggregation has been particularly studied. The methodology and computational algorithms are based on a scheme of successive optimizations using the dynamic programming method combined with an ‘adaptive searching’ method and elaborate packed storage techniques for sparse variables. The results are presented in the form of graphs of errors caused by simplifications in the modelling to calculate optimal operation programs based on requirements related to the use of a less elaborate data base and reduced main storage and processing time.
