Summary:The recovery-oriented approach to psychiatric care encourages decision making between patients and providers. However, one barrier to patients' involvement in their own treatment planning is the lack of meaningful communication with providers. Healthy Mind Messages, a collaborative art installation created by patients and staff at the Oregon State Hospital, collected anonymous participant responses to the prompt, "A healthy mind is … ." Thematic analysis of participant definitions of mental health yielded 6 highly frequent themes: introspection, physicality, cognition, socialization, openness, and calm. Results provide perceptions of recovery, prompted by art making, that could be integrated into therapeutic goals.
