Summary:We devised an apparatus consisting of odour delivery, response and recording compartments, and a bioassay of airborne alarm pheromones, to measure, through the extrusion of the stinger, the stinging response (SR) of an isolated honey-bee worker in controlled conditions. The recipient worker responds to a stimulus with abdominal contractions; their intensity is measured by a manometer as the difference in air pressure inside a tube. The SR is specific for the alarm pheromone produced by the sting apparatus. The rise of the SR level corresponds to the number of donors or stingers, and hence to the concentration of pheromone used for stimulation.
