Summary:The effect of low-energy ions on the structural and mechanical properties and the morphology of iron surfaces is investigated. The specimens were subject to bombardment by N +, Ar +, Ti + ions with energy of the order of 1 keV. The results obtained testified to a significant effect of the low-energy irradiation on microhardness, friction coefficient and roughness characteristics of the surface. The mechanical property change of the irradiated materials was observed at depths exceeding the ion range.
