Summary:The effect of adding copper to the aluminum alloy 01970 on the mechanical properties and resistance to corrosion cracking of its weldment was investigated. Microstructural changes caused by copper addition is discussed. Strips of seven 01970 alloy samples with different Cu content (0.05-0.7%) were quenched and aged. Welding properties were found to decrease with increasing copper content barring the crack coefficient which increased. Mechanical properties were found to be enhanced by copper addition. Similar was the effect on resistance to corrosion cracking. An addition of up to 0.5% Cu is recommended for high corrosion resistance of the alloy.
