Summary:A new flow-visualization system by using infrared thermography has been proposed. The system was applied to theflow around a two-dimensional circular cylinder with smooth surface, and its validity was examined. The relation between the surface temperature distribution on the cylinder and the flow characteristics was clarified. By comparing the present results with the previous ones given by the other investigators The validity of the system was recognized. Furthermore, the variation of the surf ace temperature distribution on the cylinder with the Reynolds number in the subcritical and critical Reynolds-number ranges was examined in detail, The results indicated that the flow pattern changed suddenly at Re≅ 3.3× 105.
