Summary:A method for direct determination of the effective charge numbers for the species of a polydisperse polyelectrolyte is presented. This method is based on a stationary convective diffusion process across a porous membrane. Its theoretical basis lies on the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. As a model substance we used lignosulfonate and our results agree with the literature data. With the present method it is easy to study the effect of various parameters (e.g., pH, solvent, temperature, ionic strength, etc.) on the charge numbers. Furthermore, with the present method the pre-fractionation of the polydisperse polyelectrolyte is unnecessary.
