Summary:With regard to 100th anniversary of the publication of Richard Becker's famous paper on shock waves and detonation, this article highlights today's relevance of Becker's work on what is known as the BKW EOS. The BKW‐based thermo‐chemical code “Dragon” is presented and the development of the insensitive and blast enhanced PBX “KS23” (RDX/Al/HTPB 58/27/15) is taken as an example to demonstrate the application of Dragon in the design of a modern high explosive. The single experimental development steps of KS23 as well as the underlying and supporting theoretical work are described.
