Summary:The influence of phosphorus and boron on the fatigue strength and the impact value of carburized steels were investigated. Phosphorus weakens the grain,~ boundary and so decreases the fatigue strength and the impact value with frequent grain boundary cracks. Boron addition improves the fatigue strength and the impact value of the steel tainted with P. Auger electron spectroscopy revealed that the B treatment substantially prevents P from segregating at grain boundaries. And the reduction of silicon and manganese contents increases the fatigue strength and the impact value of the B bearing steel.
