Summary:New photocrosslinking polymers based on photoreactive methacrylate derivatives copolymerized with styrene and maleic anhydride were synthesized and characterized. The polymers were obtained by radical polymerization under controlled conditions. The thermal studies showed that the polymers have high glass transition temperatures and good thermal stability. The photochemical behaviors were investigated in solutions and in thin films. The study confirms that all synthesized polymers show high sensitivity towards UV irradiation in different solvents, at different concentrations and temperatures. The conversion of the cinnamoyl groups to the dimerized or crosslinked forms is rapid at the first few minutes of irradiation. The results indicate the presence of an intramolecular crosslinks beside the intermolecular cyclization due to dimerization with the adjacent chalcone groups.
