Summary:A propane flamer can be used to reduce the number of adult Colorado potato beetles, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), in the spring. Sublethal injuries caused to adult Colorado potato beetles by a propane flamer are described. Beetles surviving the propane flamer treatment suffered leg and antenna injuries. Segments of the appendages with the smallest diameter were damaged first. Tarsi, antennae, femur-tibia joints, and coxa-body joints were damaged sequentially. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that injuries resulted from degeneration of muscles of the different segments at temperatures in the range of 65-75 degrees C. Beetles did not recover from these injures
