Summary: | The reference to the title of Linda Nochlin's celebrated 1971 essay, ‘Why have there been no great women artists?’, is neither facetious nor gratuitous. Following her cue, I will argue here that the deficiencies of art‐historical writing in the Portuguese language are a matter of institutional structures. Like the so‐called ‘woman problem’ posited by Nochlin nearly half a century ago, the answer lies in the wrong‐headedness of the question. |
