Summary:The present article plots a critical route through two currents of thought, dependence theory and all studies related to the problem of coloniality. Coloniality--the highest form of material subjugation and epistemic violence exercised by dominant peoples--also makes up a body of hegemonic accounts that form the same matrix into which colonial regimes of knowledge and power are inserted. Colonialism, incidentally, should be spoken of in the plural, as it underpins and defines many areas. Dependence and coloniality, conversely, are tantamount to two theoretical developments that bear witness to the huge potential in unraveling the different dimensions of the complex political, economic, and cultural processes that constitute colonial denomination.
