Summary:This article critically appraises the accuracy of English medieval lay subsidy records. In this field the scepticism of scholars investigating the detailed local rolls contrasts with the confidence of those using the resultant national, county or borough totals to deduce changes in the distribution of wealth over the Later Middle Ages. The author finds evidence not merely of under-assessment but of significant local variation. Nevertheless he argues that both generally occurred within ranges that still leave the material usable for comparative purposes, though within margins of error rather wider than have often been assumed.
