Summary:Microcomputer-based digitization of wool fibers was used for the measurement of fiber diameter and the derivation of mean diameter and standard deviation of a lot of wool or of a single fleece. The two systems utilized in this project were a Ladd Graphic Digitizing System and a Panasonic SR Partner-PC with a SAC Grafbar model GD-7 sonic digitizer. Using standard ASTM Test D2130 wedge card procedures, the diameter, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of wool samples were obtained. Microcomputer-based digitization methods decreased the time needed to measure fiber diameters and decreased operator fatigue compared with standard ASTM D2130 wedge card procedures.
