Summary:Background Functional tricuspid regurgitation secondary to left heart pathology has been a neglected entity. Recent evidence has underscored the importance of its concomitant correction with left heart surgery. Methods Literature review was done in PubMed database with the search term “functional tricuspid regurgitation.” The original articles which addressed specifically the surgical aspects of functional tricuspid regurgitation in adults were selected. Out of the 945 articles searched, 158 articles were found to meet the criteria and were reviewed thoroughly in view of writing a narrative review. Results More insights into functional tricuspid regurgitation (fTR) with the advancements in imaging have resulted in the evolution of newer treatment options. Thus, there has been a proliferation of surgical techniques to address fTR with lesser emphasis on conservative treatment. The current evidence favors a proactive approach to fTR and its surgical correction. Conclusion The algorithmic approach to fTR, its early identification, and evidence-based surgical strategies could translate to better long-term survival outcomes for the patients.
