Summary:On photo-irradiation of a solubilized collagen film in methyl methacrylate (MMA), polymerization took place in the film efficiently, and poly (MMA) -grafted collagen films were easily obtained. The dynamic modulus and dynamic loss modulus of the grafted films were measured, and showed that poly (MMA) was packed closely in the film. Collagen could be removed from the grafted films by decomposing with acid, and poly (MMA) films were obtained. The surfaces and section of the poly (MMA) films were observed with SEM, and porous structure was found. The structure of the grafted film was discussed on the basis of dynamic elasticity and SEM photographs, and a scthematic strcture was proposed that poly (MMA) domain was like a pile driven into the collagen matrix. Polymerization mechanism was discussed on the basis of the structure.
