Abstract To determine the water needs of farmed deer during transport and handling, red deer hinds were observed before and after a period of water and feed withdrawal of 2 or 20 h and during a subsequent 6-h period of confinement when water was available. Behaviour related to drinking was recorded during the test period. Haematocrit and plasma electrolytes (sodium, chloride and potassium) were measured in blood samples taken throughout the study. Plasma sodium and chloride concentrations were significantly elevated after 20 h without water ( P < 0.05). These returned to baseline after access to water for 6 h. Deer spent more time drinking during the test period after being deprived of water for 20, rather than 2 h ( P < 0.05). Also, deer initially deprived of water for 20 h drank for longer when returned to the paddock at the end of the experiment ( P < 0.001), despite seeming to rehydrate during the test period. Thus, the deer's need for water may not have been fully met during the test period.
