Summary:With the emergence of widespread market activity in Russia, the prevalence of corruption and crime in business affairs has been generally recognized as a major cause of concern. A paper places the issue of business ethics in Russia squarely in the context of the concept of civil society and in the light of attitudes and habits ingrained in Russian culture over many years. Business is an important aspect of civil society, and the development of a system of ethical business practices in Russia is part and parcel of the process of creating a civil society. The need to overcome the impact of a harsh and authoritarian history is real and unavoidable.
