Summary:The dynamics of psychoemotional state and cognitive processes were studied in middle-aged women before and after 20-day courses of an ethanolic extract of Teucrium polium L. Use of extract decreased psychoemotional tension, which was linked with the modulatory actions of the flavonoids and terpenoids present in the extract on GABA A receptors. Use of extract was followed by improvements in measures of short-term memory, increases in the productivity and concentration of attention, and simultaneous increases in the speeds of information analysis, synthesis, and processing in the higher segments of the CNS. Improvements in cognitive processes appeared to result from the neurotropic actions of phenylpropanoid glycosides present in the extract.
