Overview of Cultivation, Scientific Research, and Industrialization of Chinese Pomegranate

Pomegranate is one kind of excellent fruit with ecologic, economic, visual value and health care function, which originated in central Asian region such as Iran, Afghanistan and so on. In our country, pomegranate has been cultivated more than 2100 years up to now, along the Silk Road introduced into China at the time of Han Wudi. After the 1990s, pomegranate production obtained rapid development, and has gradually evolved from “sides ” planting to scale, intensive cultivation. Some regions such as Xi’an, Yicheng, Panxi, Zhengzhou, Mengzi and so on, have built thousands of hectares of pomegranate fields which had become a pillar of industry of local new countryside building. In this article, based on the related literature of pomegranate, the growing history, the pomegranate production and the current research situation of industrial development in China are reviewed, and the existing problems are analyzed, then we put forward the direction for sustainable development of the pomegranate industry in the future.
