Summary:Urban-rural comparisons of the prevalence of diabetes were made in a study of 2,567 rural and 6,190 urban men aged 45 to 64 as part of the Puerto Rican Heart Health Program. Diabetes in urban men was more than twice as prevalent as in rural men, and blood glucose concentrations were significantly higher in urban populations. In obese men, however, the urban and rural prevalence rates for diabetes were the same. The prevalence of diabetes increased with age and relative weight, and was associated with elevations of serum cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting serum triglycerides. A positive family history was found more commonly in diabetics than in nondiabetics. Possible reasons for the higher prevalence of diabetics in the urban area are discussed.
