Summary:Cytochrome oxidase (CYO) is a key enzyme in the respiratory chain. Therefore, CYO has an important role in the cell metabolism. In the present study CYO activity in the rat retina was identified by histochemical staining. The density of the staining, corresponding to the activity of the CYO, was evaluated quantitatively by densitometry. A high CYO activity was found in the retinal pigment epithelium, in the inner segment of the photoreceptors, in the outer plexiform layer and in the inner plexiform layer. In the outer segment of the photoreceptors, in the outer nuclear layer, and in the inner nuclear layer the CYO activity was relatively low. An analysis of variance demonstrated that the precision in an estimation of a mean depends on the number of animals and the number of retinal sections per animal.
