Summary:A recent overseas study tour provided an opportunity for observation of the physiotherapist as one of a team concerned with health care in the workplace. This paper presents impressions gained during visits to some overseas institutions and industries in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. A number of roles are possible for the physiotherapist in the workplace, but the nature of the contribution made varies between countries. The special features of physiotherapy practice in some overseas industries, the practical problems faced by the physiotherapist in implementing ergonomic principles and some of the solutions devised by physiotherapists are described.
