X-ray diffraction measurement and equation of state for piezoelectric Pb(Zr1−xTix)O3 (x = 0.1–0.8) under static compression

Summary:XRD patterns of Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 (x = 0.1-0.8) were measured at pressures up to about 35 GPa at room temperature using synchrotron radiation. In order to refine the crystal structure, Rietveld analysis was performed. The structure of Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 (x = 0.5-0.8) is tetragonal in space group P4mm at ambient pressure and is transformed into a cubic phase in space group Pmbar3m at about 7.5 GPa (x = 0.8), about 7.9 GPa (x = 0.6), and about 4.1 GPa (x = 0.5) respectively. The structure of Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 (x = 0.1-0.4) is rhombohedral in space group R3c at ambient pressure. No pressure-induced phase transition for Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 (x = 0.1-0.4) was seen over the pressure range studied. The Birch-Murnaghan equation of state fit to the experimental data was not only measured for Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 (x = 0.1-0.8) but also the pressure phase diagram of PbTiO3-PbZrO3 system at 300 K is suggested.
