Summary:By using colloidal crystals, the authors have synthesized a new class of metallic materials with long-range nanoscale ordering and hierarchical porosity. The structure of the materials is an almost exact replica of some 3D wire-mesh photonic crystals, but reduced by a factor of 20,000 to the submicron scale. The materials may therefore have photonic properties in reflectance mode in the visible-light region. (AIAA)
