Summary:Diagnostic upper endoscopy is the best tool to obtain the most information regarding potential gastric abnormalities that may lead to clinical symptoms. Its usefulness is related to its application for appropriate indications by an experienced endoscopist. The endoscopist should not only be familiar with the appropriate techniques to allow for complete visualization of the stomach, but with the normal appearance of the different regions of the stomach. In addition, optimal performance of upper endoscopy requires a knowledge of the subtle variations from normal that do not require further investigation as a potential source of clinical symptoms. This knowledge is often as important to the patient as the ability to recognize obvious abnormalities.
