The Montmor Discourse: Science and the Ideology of Stability in Old Régime France

In 1663, scholar Samuel Sorbiere pronounced a discourse on the sciences at a meeting of savants. Sorbiere voiced a new ideological conception of the relation between the sciences and society, and his speech marks the beginning of an Enlightenment ideology.
