Summary:The author reviews the historical aspects of the radiotherapy of pituitary tumours and then analyses the results of treatment at Sheffield between 1940 and 1963. One hundred and sixty eight pituitary tumours were treated. The Chromophobe adenomas and the Acidophil adenomas are analysed in detail. In the first group, surgery alone achieved a 30% 4 year recurrence free rate, radiotherapy alone a 75% 4 year recurrence free rate and a combination of surgery and post-operative radiotherapy produced a 93% 4 year recurrence free rate. Patients with Eosinophil adenomas can be relieved of their symptoms but their life expectancy is not improved.
