Summary: | Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a common compressive neuropathy of the foot, but is a significantly misunderstood clinical entity.
We performed a narrative review of the tarsal tunnel trough the published literature.
The accurate diagnosis is the most important part for success in the treatment, made by clinical and physical examination. Complementary test, such MRI or electromyography, help us to accurate the diagnosis and surgical planning.
Initial treatment should be non-operative, although is of limited value in some cases, where surgery should be considered from the start. Open surgery should be recommended for releasing all the potential nerve entrapment sites, although new techniques appears to offer hopeful results.
