Low Protein C in Hemodialysis Patients

Protein C activity was studied in 14 hemodialysis patients and compared with 14 healthy, age- and sex-matched controls. Prior to dialysis, protein C activity was depressed in all patients (mean 0.43, range 0.24–0.68 versus mean 1.00, range 0.79–1.14). During dialysis, protein C activity rose but did...

Summary:Protein C activity was studied in 14 hemodialysis patients and compared with 14 healthy, age- and sex-matched controls. Prior to dialysis, protein C activity was depressed in all patients (mean 0.43, range 0.24–0.68 versus mean 1.00, range 0.79–1.14). During dialysis, protein C activity rose but did not reach normal levels. The reduced protein C activity may play an important role in the altered hemostatic equilibrium in chronic hemodialysis.
