Summary:Mechanical seals are one of the most critical parts in pumps. They are heavily stressed components which can suddenly fail. In order to improve knowledge about the processes between the sliding surfaces of mechanical seals, various investigations have been performed by Sulzer on test stands and on real pumps. Since acoustic emission measurements have shown great potential for wear and friction diagnosis of seals, a pilot system has been developed and installed in the thermal power plant at Mannheim (Germany) to examine those signals.
