Summary:In this letter, a novel compact octa-band Planar Inverted F-shapeed Antenna (PIFA) with a single feed capable of LTE/ GSM/UMTS/WLAN operation in the mobile phone is presented. Various techniques are used for creating the antenna's multiband/broadband characteristic. A U-shaped slit is etched on the driven patch which forces the current to flow around the slit hence, reducing the resonant frequency and a quarter-wave resonator is connected to the feed strip in parallel with the ground plane to improve the performance at 900M Hz resonant mode. Two slots are etched on the ground plane to improve the impedance matching at middle frequencies (GSM1800/1900/ UMTS/LTE2300/2500) and to act as a parasitic radiator at high frequencies (f=5500 MHz) respectively. Finally, the proposed antenna which occupies a small-size of 30*25*7 mm3 or 5.25 cm3 can cover the GSM900/1800/1900/UMTS/ LTE2300/2500/ HIPERLAN/2/IEEE 802.11a operation. A prototype of PIFA was fabricated and tested. The measured and simulated results are in excellent agreement. Details of the antenna design are described and its far-field radiation performances are studied too.
