Summary:Coaches are often the first supervisors to assess sport-related concussions in athletics. A cross-sectional survey study was conducted across secondary schools to assess coaches' knowledge of sport-related concussion. Participants included 126 coaches who completed a 2-part survey instrument (demographic questionnaire and knowledge assessment). The outcome measures consisted of the scores of the prevention, management, and recognition sections, with maximum scores of 8 per section and 24 for the total score. Overall, coaches demonstrated a moderate knowledge of sport-related concussion (84%). The area of greatest knowledge was recognition (92%) and the least was management (79%). Male coaches scored significantly higher than female coaches (P < .01), and coaches with a history of concussion (P = .04) scored significantly higher on the recognition section. Coaches who attended a workshop on concussion scored higher (P = .02) on the management section. Coaches' workshops on concussion may effectively improve their sport-related concussion knowledge.
