Summary:The use of tungsten powder wire produced from metallurgical waste in surface welding under AN 26S flux is studied experimentally; specifically, the powder wire is produced on the basis of the tungstenbearing components (including tungsten ore and concentrates) in dusty wastes from aluminum production that contain carbon and fluorine. The research includes the manufacture of powder wire with different proportions of the tungsten-bearing and carbon-bearing components; selection of the welding conditions; determination of the chemical composition of the weld metal and the slag after welding; metallographic study; and wear tests. The reduction of tungsten directly from tungsten-bearing oxides using carbon-bearing reducing agents is shown to be possible in principle; the degree of tungsten reduction is more than 96%. In this technology, tungsten carbides of size 1–5 µm are present in the welded layer.
