More Information
Summary:Nineteen intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus in eighteen patients treated by closed or open reduction were investigated. Ages ranged from 33 to 76 years with an average of 52 years. The follow-up period was from 5 months to 4 years 10 months with an average of 2 years 4 months. Fractures were classified according to Arnessen as tongue type in 12 feet, depression type in 4 feet and stamp type in 3 feet. Westhues'method was carried out in 15 feet, screw fixation was done in one foot and plate fixation was perfomed in 3 feet. Neither the age of the patients nor the Böhler angle influenced the clinical results. There was a significant correlation between the occurrence of complications and clinical results. Factors which were significantly associated with a poor outcome included tendinitis of the peroneal tendon and calcaneal spur formation. To improve the clinical result, treatment should ensure that the calcaneal fracture is anatomically reduced to prevent the occurrence of various complications.
