Summary:MoSi2 alloyed with aluminum element has been successfully synthesized by mechanical alloying through implementation of a subsequent heat-treating technique. Hardness and fracture toughness values of the hot-pressing disks at room temperature were measured and their responded microstructures were analyzed by using SEM and X-ray. No Al-Mo interphase and Al2O3 phase appear in mechanical alloying process of Mo-Si-Al system, meanwhile, the addition of Al is found to hold up the phase formation process of mechanical alloying. The appropriate content of Al addition in Mo-Si-Al system is 8.5 at.% and this composite has the highest hardness and toughness values, an improvement about of 34% and 64% more than that of pure MoSi2, respectively, which is attributed to Mo(Si,Al)2 particles strengthening and crack deflection and crack microbridging toughening mechanisms.
