Summary:The results of multiple joint replacement for 62 rheumatoid arthritis patients are reported. Subjects were followed up for an average of 37 months. In 52 patients, walking ability improved or was maintained but in 5 patients it worsened and 5 patients had died. Factors which worsened the patient's walking ability were rheumatic disorders of the foot, ankle, and cervical spine and compression fractures of the thoracolumbar spine due to osteoporosis. Extra care must be given for these factors after multiple joint replacement in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
