Summary:Usefulness of Autologous Blood Thransfusions in Spinal Surgery. The purpose of this study was to elucidate whether autologous blood transfusion is useful in spinal surgery. We divided 78 patients who underwent spinal surgery into an autologous blood transfusion group (A group; 39 patients) and allogenic blood transfusion group (B group; 39 paticnts). There were no significant differences in the total amount of blood transfused and operation time between the two groups. We compared the postoperative complications between two proups. Only one patient developed a urinary tract infection in the A group, whereas 5 patients with urinary tract infection, 3 with liver dysfunctions, 2 with decubitus infections and one with ulcer were found in the B group. In conclusion, autologous bloodtransfusion is useful in spinal sugery because it reduces the amount of postoperative complications.
