Summary:Methods for estimating the Pt utilization of an MEA, the ratio of the electrochemically active Pt surface area of the MEA to the Pt surface area of the catalyst, were examined. The most reliable and accurate estimation was obtained by the method which uses CO as the probe for both the surface area. With this method, the Pt utilization of our conventional MEA was found ca. 90%, which is much higher than the values other widely-used methods predicted.
