Summary:The authors summarize research to date in gene theory and appropriately conclude that common genetic variants contribute substantially to ADHD susceptibility, but none have shown a robust association thus far. The attitudes of Europeans and Americans in the area of medication treatment for ADHD (especially in young children) have differed widely for years, but the guidelines in Europe are changing.1 In North America, stimulants are the first-line approach for pharmacotherapy in children older than 5 years with ADHD. A response rate of 70% is observed in treatment with methylphenidate and/or amphetamine formulations,2 but stimulants also have a significant potential for misuse.
