Summary:In the past 3 years, we have encountered 31 aged patients who underwent salvage surgery for degenerative lumbar disease. 11 of these patients underwent posterolateral fusion (PLF) of the vertebrae during the initial surgery. We analyzed their date with regard to clinical symptoms, postoperative results, and the main pathological factors of salvage surgery. The main pathological factor was insufficient decompression at the affected level in 19 cases. On the other hand, in only 3 cases that underwent PLF during the initial surgery, it was canal stenosis of the upper level after fusion. Based on these investigations, it can be concluded that sufficient decompression and adequate posterolateral fusion should be achieved during the initial surgery.
