Summary:The vibration properties of a coupled system of magnetic fluid and elastic membrane under impulsive magnetic field have not been clarified. In this paper, vibration of a coupled system of water-based magnetic fluid and circular elastic membrane is investigated experimentally. A thin elastic membrane covers a magnetic fluid layer in a shallow and circular vessel. The coupled vibration is generated by applying external impulsive magnetic forces on the concentrated small region of the magnetic fluid layer. The vibration modes are studied both when axisymmetric and non-axisymmetirc impulsive magnetic forces are applied. Various vibrations are observed depending on the physical parameters such as the density of magnetic fluid, the depth of the fluid layer and the thickness of the membrane.
