Summary:In this paper a simplified evaluation method for the prediction of permanent deformation of asphalt in the field and for low volume roads, is proposed. The method provides a relative rutting indicator, which is calculated from a series of simple test results or design inputs, each with different weightings based on engineering judgement. The cohesion and frictional components of a mix are factors contributing to the rutting resistance of a mix and are given positive weightings while the loading regime and temperature are external factors causing the rutting and are given negative weightings. The method was applied to a real-life case study and the results obtained were in line with what were observed in the field. The advantage of the method is that it is fairly versatile and does not depend on one test parameter but a number of them, which can be replaced or altered with time.
