Summary:The post-Great War Soldier Settlement Scheme, a tragic failure for many of the soldier settlers and their families, resulted in huge financial losses for the governments of the day. Less understood is how the Scheme in Queensland impacted the wider community beyond the settlers and their families. This article explains the Scheme's impact on three sections of the wider Queensland community: land owners, other primary producers and local authorities. Drawing on contemporary newspapers and government archival material, this article argues that the Scheme had unintended impacts on members of the wider Queensland community, but those impacts were not always negative.
