Summary:The author shared his view on the articles, "Taming the Measurement Monster" and "The Quest for Quality: Perspectives from the Safety Net". He expected healthcare executives to address the operational issues of technology and expense, health services researchers to conquer the statistical challenges, and one or more regulatory or advocacy groups to establish a standardized reporting framework. Subsequently, healthcare organizations would achieve strategic benefits from making performance data available to purchasers and consumers of healthcare services. One has only to consider the expenditures for information technology and management in healthcare organizations to know that healthcare executives believe information resources are a key success factor. Delivering healthcare is an incredibly complex business, a fact that is not likely to change in the future. With competing requests for outcomes data from many sources, data management becomes a strong competitor to performance management for many healthcare organizations.
