Summary:The central role of teachers in enhancing education quality and promoting education reform has been largely acknowledged by various researchers. However, professional development (PD) in Iran is far from satisfactory. This paper initially outlines major shifts in professional development. It then provides a critical appraisal of professional development in Iran in both pre service and in service education. Finally, it concludes by offering ways to revitalize continuing teacher professional development.
