Rectangular Pulse Generation Based on High-Voltage Transistor Switches Operating in Synchronous and Asynchronous Modes

Summary:Two modes (synchronous and asynchronous) of operation of a high-voltage pulse generator, which is based on parallel-connected high-voltage switches (HVSs) for the formation of rectangular pulses, are considered. In the synchronous mode, a steepness of the rise front of 336 V/ns was achieved when connecting four HVSs and 188 V/ns when connecting one HVS at a resistive load of 330 Ω at a supply voltage of 8 kV. The dependence of the duration of the high-voltage pulse rise on the supply-voltage level and the number of switched HVSs is investigated. For the case of an asynchronous mode, a pulse repetition frequency of 4 MHz and an efficiency of 75% were achieved with a load power of 41 kW. An example of simulation is used to show the effect of the switching frequency on the parameters of the generated pulses at the load.
